  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: slow-growing
  • Flowering period: January to February
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Primarily grown for its larger than average, bright yellow flowers, which clothe the bare stems of this deciduous shrub from mid to late winter, the leaves however will put on a nice show too, when they change from green to yellow in autumn. Forming a distinct vase-shape, the stems add structure and texture to the border, partculraly when they are clearly visible after the leaves have fallen. All in all, this shrub is much more interesting during the colder months of the year, so it makes a great addition to a winter garden, especially when underplanted with bulbs that flower around the same time.

  • Garden care: In early spring remove any misplaced, crossing or diseased branches and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant.
