This handsome perennial is primarily grown for its large, glossy-green, pinnate foliage, which is flushed with bronze. It is wonderful for providing a dramatic and architectural look, but for added interest, spikes of pale pink, star-shaped flowers appear in mid to late summer. These plants love reliably moist soil, so will thrive on the margins of a pond or stream. Alternatively, they look superb as an understory plant in a woodland setting.
- Garden care: Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould when planting. Protect the young foliage against slug damage using beer traps or environmentally friendly slug pellets. Lift and divide congested colonies in early spring. Shelter from cold, drying winds.
