  In late winter slender-petalled flowers appear from amongst the clumps of white-striped foliage. The flowers are rich lilac, becoming slightly paler and opening up to reveal their yellow centres as they age. Plant them in big, bold drifts for best effect.
  
  
• Garden care: Plant bulbs in naturalistic drifts 10cm (4in) deep in September or October.
