Check stakes and ties

Check tree stakes to make sure they are firm and that the ties are not too tight – loosen if necessary to allow for new growth in the spring. Also, before climbers start to grow vigorously, it is important to check the ties are still intact after the stresses of winter. Rubber ties and string only have a limited life span and they can break meaning whole portions of climbers tumble. A large climber can be very troublesome to re-tie in. It is also important to make sure there are no ties restricting growth. If too tight it can easily damage a stem, distorting growth and making the plant more susceptible to attacks by pests and diseases. In very severe cases, the area above the tie can die. Any ties that look like they have little room for the branch to expand, should be loosened off or changed for ones that are more suitable.
