spencer sweet pea seed
Producing a prolific display of flowers throughout summer, the sweet peas in this collection will make fine additions to the border, and look wonderful when potted up and trained over brushwood canes. For best effect plant them in a sunny spot with moderately fertile, well-drained soil - preferably near an entranceway or seating area, so you can make the most of their wonderful scent.
In this collection you will receive one packet of approximately 20 seeds of each of the following three varieties (approximately 60 seeds)
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Mollie Rillstone':Each picotee petal has a creamy coloured base that becomes pinker towards the outer edges. The scent of the flowers is strong and delicious and the blooms are of exhibition quality. Mix it with rich pinks and plums or lilacs and purples for a great effect. Not just pretty to look at though, they will also act as a magnet for beneficial insects. Height to 1.8m
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Charlie's Angel':Highly scented lavender-blue flowers add an alluring touch to cottage gardens or informal planting schemes, when they can be allowed to scramble over supporting obelisks, arches or trellis. Their soft colouring mixes well with stronger purples, blues and pinks. Height to 1.8m
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Karen Louise':A delightful sweet pea, which produces large sprays of pale lavender flowers on long stems throughout the summer. Ideal for exhibiting, the flowers also have a good, strong scent, so a vase filled with them will flood the room with perfume. Their soft colouring means they mix easily with other pastel shades as well as stronger pinks and purples. Height to 1.8m
Garden care:From October to late February, sow seeds into deep pots or root trainers filled with a good-quality seed compost and place them in a cold frame. Pinch out the tips as the plants grow to encourage them to become bushier and produce more flowers, and harden off before planting out in early April. Direct sowings can also be made in October or March. Before planting out, incorporate lots of well-rotted organic matter in the planting hole. Apply a balanced liquid plant food every two weeks while in growth and deadhead regulary to encourage more flowers.
