edible flower petals

Buy my edible flower petal collection - 10 packets of seed for £15 saving over £5 off the individual packet prices, plus only £1 P&P

Flower petals don't only need to look pretty, they can be used to colour and brighten your food dishes or long summer drinks. They can all be grown to flower this year and there is time to get growing now. Here I have recommended my favourite edible flower petals.

The collection comprises 1 packet each of:

Anchusa azurea 'Dropmore' - Vibrant deep blue flowers appear on upright stems throughout summer creating a dazzling display. Their edible petals look wonderful sprinkled into salads or frozen into ice cubes and then plonked into summer drinks.

Calendula officinalis - Lovely daisy-like flowerheads in a vivid shade of orange. The petals are edible and have a peppery flavour, which can be used to enhance the flavour and add colour to soups, meat, egg and rice dishes as well as salads. Easy and quick to grow.

Centaurea cyanus - Piercing bright blue flowers with ruffled petals and violet-blue centresappear from early to late summer. Once a common sight in cornfields, this lovely annual is perfect for naturalising in a sunny wildflower meadow and is a magnet for butterflies and bees. The flower petals are edible and have a clove-like taste.

Chives - Delicious evergreen herb that will come back year after year. The slim, elegant dark green leaves can be snipped with scissors and used as a spicy addition to salads, or in soups, stews and curries. The pale mauve pom-pom like flowers, which are also edible and look wonderful when sprinkled over a summer salad.

Courgette 'Romanesco' - Small to medium sized, lightly ridged courgettes from Rome. The bushes produce a large number of quality fruits with a nutty flavour and are highly recommended. The flowers can be eaten too, but make sure you remove the pistols first. Try them dipped in batter then fried.

Hesperis matronalis var. albiflora - Sweet rocket has deliciously scented, white flowers in loose clusters and are attractive to bees and other beneficial insects. Their perfume will fill the air in late spring and early summer evenings. They are also edible and look great sprinkled over salads.

Tagetes tenuifolia 'Golden Gem' - Producing an abundance of deep golden-yellow flowers throughout summer and well into autumn, this is a very showy annual that can be used as a companion plant in the rose garden and vegetable patch to help repel aphids. The petals are edible and can be scattered over salads.

Tropaeolum 'Alaska' (nasturtuim) - One of the easiest annuals to grow, has masses of funnel-shpaed, red, yellow, orange and cream flowers. Both the flowers and the leaves are edible and have a sweet, peppery flavour.

Borago officinalis 'Bianca' (white borage) - The white flowers of this borage make a fresh change to the traditional blue. The young leaves of this annual have a cucumber-like flavour and can be added to many recipes. They are often used in pasta dishes, while the flowers can be used in ice cubes, salads and even dipped in batter and deep fried.

Viola tricolor (heartsease) - Dainty, small-headed pansies in shades of purple, violet, cream and yellow, appear in profusion for a long period throughout the summer. The flowers of this annual or short-lived perennial are edible and can be used to garnish puddings or add to salads.
