Buy Thunbergia alata 'Suzie White Black Eye' (Suzie Series) black-eyed Susan vine: Great for adding long-lasting summer colour

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, moist but well drained
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: tender

This fantastic climber will grow in a flash, and produce lashings of dark-eyed white flowers over a prolonged period in summer and autumn. It's perfect for smothering an unsightly fence during the summer, or it can be trained onto an obelisk or arch if you want to create some height. An evergreen perennial, it can be overwintered in a heated conservatory, but more often than not, it is grown as an annual and replaced each year.

  • Garden care: Keep under glass where temperatures do not dip below 5C, only moving outside after the frosts have passed. A twining climber, it will need support, and it should be watered freely when in growth - and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly.
