Buy Skimmia japonica 'Temptation' (PBR) (female) Japanese skimmia (female) (berry-bearing): Impressive foliage and flowers

  • Position: partial to full shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained neutral to acidic soil, or ericaceous compost
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The foliage of this shrubby evergreen will offer year-round interest, but it is in spring, when the creamy white flowers appear, or in the autumn and winter, when it produces its clusters of glossy red berries, that it really comes into its own. It's great for adding a bright splash of colour to the border during the cooler months, but it is also perfect for pots. Keep in mind that as this plant is a female, to get all these wonderful berries it must have a male skimmia nearby to cross-pollinate with ('Kew Green', 'Rubella' or 'Fragrans' would be ideal).

  • Garden care: Lightly trim after flowering, if necessary. To improve the moisture retention qualities of the soil add plenty of well-rotted compost when planting.
