Buy Skimmia japonica 'Red Riding Hood' Japanese skimmia (female) (berry-bearing):

  • Position: partial to full shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained neutral to acidic soil, or ericaceous compost
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A compact, bushy evergreen shrub with glossy mid-green leaves and pink buds opening to tiny, fragrant white flowers in April and May. These will be followed by wonderful bright red berries, as long as a male skimmia is nearby to cross-pollinate with ('Kew Green', 'Rubella' or 'Fragrans' would be ideal).

  • Garden care: Lightly trim after flowering, if necessary. To improve the moisture retention qualities of the soil add plenty of well-rotted compost when planting.
