Buy Sinningia speciosa 'Violacea' gloxinia Violacea tuber: Large cup-shaped flowers

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil or fibre-based compost if grown indoors
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: usually from spring to autumn
  • Hardiness: tender (will need to be over-wintered indoors, or in a shaded greenhouse)

The sumptuous colouring of this tender, summer flowering perennial, really is outstanding - and the velvety texture of the gently ruffled petals adds to the overall effect.

  • Home care: Place the tubers rounded side down, and lightly embed them into the surface of the compost. Keep compost moist but not waterlogged, and keep them in a warm, humid atmosphere. Whilst growing, the foliage should be protected from water splash and strong sunlight. If overwintering, lift and dry the tubers after the plants have died back, and store in a cool but not cold place until ready to plant the following spring.

  • CAUTION do not eat ornamental bulbs
