Buy Salvia greggii 'Icing Sugar' (PBR) autumn sage: A long-flowering sun-lover

This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

This sun-loving shrubby plant produces its flowers throughout summer and well into autumn. They are a pretty two-tone pink and are held by purple calyces on deep purple stems. Not only do they look great, but they also help attract butterflies to the garden.

  • Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon they start to fade. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Protect from excessive cold and waterlogged soils.
