Buy Rhododendron 'Koster's Brilliant Red' deciduous azalea: Vibrant orange-red flowers

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained, humus-rich, acid soil or ericaceous compost
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The eye-popping orange-red flowers of this deciduous azalea will usually appear just before the leaves, and this somehow makes the dispaly even more spectacular! As it is one of the earliest into bloom, it's useful for kicking off the season, but then it also puts on a good display in the autumn, when the normally mid-green leaves turn brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange before dropping.

  • Garden care: Avoid planting too deeply. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf mould around the base of the plant each spring.
