Buy Passiflora racemosa passion flower: Red flowers in summer and autumn

This climber is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new foliage appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: half hardy (must have winter protection)

This exotic looking and fast growing climber is ideal for adding colour to a conservatory - or very sheltered garden. It has the reddest flowers of all the passifloras, although the colour often has a hint of pink - particularly as the flowers age. Each of the long-lasting blooms can grow up to 12cm across, and they form in pendent clusters from midsummer to autumn. Then, small (inedible) green fruits appear adding to the display of this dazzling passion flower.

  • Garden care: Water freely during the growing season, but cut back a little in winter. Keep frost free in winter (they prefer temperatures no lower than 10°C) and remove dead, misplaced or overcrowded stems in spring.

  • Harmful if eaten
