Buy Maianthemum racemosum false spikenard (syn. Smilacena racemosa): Perfect for a shady border or woodland setting

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial to full shade
  • Soil: humus-rich, moist but well-drained neutral to acidic soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April and May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This handsome perennial makes an interesting addition to a shady border or woodland floor, where its attractive foliage and somewhat fluffy-looking heads of small white flowers will help add colour and form. Even more tolerant of shade than its close relative (Polygonatum or Solomon's seal), it will flourish in relatively rich soils that have a neutral to acidic pH.

  • Garden care: Provide protection from cold winds and protect young foliage slugs and snails.
