Buy Mahonia eurybracteata subsp.ganpinensis 'Soft Caress' (PBR) RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2013: RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2013

  • Position: full sun to full shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Recently released onto the market, and winner of "Plant of the Year" at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013, this is the first Mahonia of its kind to have spine-free leaves, which means that they can be planted near to paths or doorways where you may brush past them. 'Soft Caress' is a compact, evergreen shrub, so it is ideal for larger pots, where it will provide year-round interest. Alternatively, it will make a fine addition to either a sunny or partially shaded border.

  • Garden care: Every second year after flowering prune specimens grown as groundcover to just above ground level to encourage bushy growth and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

very attractive

This plant will take time to fully establish but is very attractive and doesn't attack me every time I need to tackle plants that are near it!

Lovely plant

Have 2 of these and both have grown a lot - one in a large pot and the other in a small bed. Adds architectural interest to both areas - several positive comments by visitors. Subtle flowering, but bought them for the leaves so a bonus.

Lovely shrub!

This is a lovely shrub to have in a border, It arrived looking healthy and has stayed that way since I planted it in the garden. 'Soft Caress' is a lovely shape and doesn't get too big, the leaves are attractive and so is the way they grow around the stem. I am not keen on Mahonia but this is a lovely specimen.

Best Mahonia to buy in my opinion.

Have never liked Mahonia, possibly because of the leaves. They are dull and very prickly. Never thought I would've buy one, but would recommend o

Lovely plant

Survived living in a large pot for a year during a house move and recovered beautifully when planted in our new garden. Looks good in shade with different ferns. Occasionally can look a bit threadbare

I planted this 3 years ago, it's growing well but has not flowered yet. Why?

Hello, There are a number of reasons why this might happen, but the most likely causes are either not enough sun, or a lack of nutrients. Therefore, cat back any overhanging branches if you can and make sure it is kept well watered and fed with a general purpose fertiliser.

I have one of these planted at the back of the border and it's been in situ for two years but in this time it has never flowered. What can I do to encourage flowering? Thanks

Hello, While these are tolerant of shade, they will flower best in some sun, so perhaps it needs to be moved. If however it is getting a good amount of sun, then you could give it a feed of sulphate of potash to give it a bit of a push.
