  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained, slightly acid, sandy soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness:hardy annual

Scented white flowers and handsome green foliage is always a great combination, and this relatively low growing annual lupin is no exception. It's easy to grow from seed, and it's usually in bloom within 12 weeks after sowing - and once in flower, it will carry on blooming throughout the summer. It will make an elegant addition to pots or borders, and the flowers can also be cut for the vase.

  • Garden care: Surface-sow on a tray or pot filled with freely draining seed compost and lightly cover with a little compost or vermiculite. Place in an unheated propagator; maintain temperatures between 18-25°C, and water when necessary. Germination will usually occur around 3 weeks later, and when the seedlings are large enough to handle, move them into individual pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually harden them off and plant out (30cm apart) after all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, you can surface sow them outside after the frosts in a well prepared bed.
