Buy Lonicera Blond & Beyond (‘Honey Baby’) (PBR) honeysuckle: Compact and bushy.

This climber is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained
  • Rate of growth: fast growing
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A new compact and bushy honeysuckle, that produces its highly scented, cream and yellow flowers all through the summer. It's perfect for adding a long season of interest to the patio - or creating a low, informal hedge, and the blooms, which appear in profusion, will help attract beneficial pollinating insects.

  • Garden care: Cut back established plants after flowering, removing a third of the flowering shoots. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant in early spring.

Things are looking better!

I planted my honeysuckle in a patio pot in spring. It produced one or two flowers and one very tall stem. It then withered and appeared diseased but did not show signs of infestation. It was cared for during the hot spell. I cut it back to base and put some wild flower seeds in the pot. Realising It was covered by five year guarantee I decided to check on its condition. Now, in October, hidden by the flowers it has some lush green compact leaves. I will keep an eye on it and I am hoping it is recovered.

Beautiful and easy to grow

The first two of these I ordered amazed me as they were so big and healthy even though they weren't even in leaf at the time! I had planted them up in tubs just before the 'Beast from the East' hit and I was concerned about how they would survive but they shrugged it off. They are on my front garden in tubs and are thriving - beautiful flowers that the bees love. The only thing I would mention is that they aren't convinced that they should be 'compact bushes' and are trying to climb up my window! :-) I may add a small 'plant support' into the tubs to let them climb if they want to. I loved these plants so much that I ordered a third for the back garden but sadly the specimen I received was small and unhealthy and despite my best efforts and much pampering and 'babying' it died....! I was refunded under the Guarantee but as Crocus was then out of stock it was very disappointing. I'm hoping to order it again for the back garden when it comes back in stock!

Nearly got me stung!

My soil is poor and most plants struggle. I particularly wanted a honeysuckle for insects - I've been told months like honeysuckle fragrance. My 'honey baby' has been grown in a tub and it's thriving. I can't comment on whether moths like it but bees certainly do! I leaned over to smell it's flowers and nearly got stung by a bee which emerged from deep within the flower. Very pleased with my purchase - the problem of poor soil and honeysuckle has been resolved - and it's more food for the bees.

Lonicera blond and beyond has grown to about a metre already. Should I support this further? I thought it was a low bush variety.
