Buy leek 'Below Zero' leek /Allium porrum 'Below Zero' F1: Very winter hardy and stands well

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: humus-rich, moisture retentive soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Bred in Britain, this rust-resistant leek is noted for its tolerance to really cold temperatures. It’s a handsome plant, with pure white shanks and dark green leaves that contain potassium, folic acid and vitamins A and C. Because they tend to stand well without bolting, they can be harvested throughout the winter.

  • Growing Instructions:Early sowings can be done under glass glass into pots or trays and transplanted to their final growing place (after hardening off) when the seedlings are about pencil thickness. Try to space sowings a month apart to allow for a successional crop, and outdoors, sow 1cm deep in drills 30cm apart. When large enough to handle, gently thin the plants to 15cm apart. If you want to achieve a long white shank, draw dry soil around the stems in summer and autumn, trying not to get the soil in between the leaves.

  • Sow: January to April

  • Harvest: November to February

  • Approximate quantity: 75 seeds.
