Buy Hypericum Magical Innocence ('Kolmaginno') (PBR) St. John's wort: An abundance of flowers and long-lasting berries

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A tough, reliable, but incredibly showy plant, this relatively compact shrub will really pack a punch in borders or pots. Initially forming a relatively compact mound of rich green foliage, the display really starts to kick off when it starts to produce masses of yellow flowers in summer. As the petals and long, showy stamens are shed, relatively large, glossy fruits start to form, changing colour from yellow to salmon-peach as they mature. These are incredibly long lasting, and if you can resist picking them for the vase, they will add colour and interest well into the autumn.

  • Garden care: After flowering lightly trim back shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
