Buy Hydrangea macrophylla Magical Revolution Blue ('Hokomarevo') (PBR) mophead hydrangea: Blue flowers that turn claret at the end of summer

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Forms a dense, rounded dome of rich green foliage, which from midsummer is topped with showy clusters of blue flowers, each turning rich claret towards the end of the season. These flowers have a long vase life and can be used in both fresh and dried arrangements, so they are ideal for the home florist - but you will want to make sure you keep some in the border too! Please be aware however that in subsequent years, the flower colour may vary depending on the soil's pH.

  • Garden care: Leave the old flower heads in place through the winter. As the new shoots start to emerge in spring cut back a third to a quarter of the previous season's flowering stems to the base and cut back the remaining flower heads to the first pair of buds.

Would this variety be suitable for potting in a container?

Bruce Baxter

Yes, this is a relatively compact form, so will do well in a large pot - provided it is kept well fed and watered.
