Buy Hydrangea macrophylla 'Forever & Ever Red' mophead hydrangea: Big flower clusters for many months

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Producing a mass of flowers over several months, this new hydrangea offers great value for money. Like all mopheads, the flower colour will vary (depending on your soil's pH), but as it can produce its big domed clusters on both this years as well as last years stems, it can produce twice as many as one of the older forms. It is quite a well established plant, but it won't get to big, which makes it ideal for both borders or pots.

  • Garden care: Hydrangeas do not like to dry out - particularly if they are grown in a sunny spot. Therefore, if they start to wilt in dry weather, soak the roots with a hose and the plant will usually bounce back. Remove faded flowerheads in spring after the danger of frosts, cutting back the flowered stems to a strong pair of buds. Take out misplaced or diseased shoots. Mulch young plants with a well-rotted manure or compost in spring. Once established, remove a quarter to a third of the shoots to the base of the plant.
