Buy hazelnut 'Butler' hazelnut: Harvest your very own hazelnuts

This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: fetile, well-drained
  • Flowering period: February to March
  • Harvesting period: September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This hazel will reliably produce large, tasty nuts that can either be eaten straight from the tree (usually from September) or stored for Christmas. An American-bred cultivar, 'Butler' is popular with commercial growers, and being partially self-fertile, it is usually cross pollinated with other Corylus to produce a really big crop.

  • Garden care: Cut out dead, diseased and damaged wood in March and apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant.
