Buy Geranium tuberosum tuberous-rooted cranesbill: A tuberous, spring-flowering cranesbill

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in spring or summer, then fresh new growth appears again in autumn or winter.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Fresh feathery foliage appears in autumn, forming a loose, open mound, which in spring the following year is topped with pinkish purple, saucer-shaped flowers. After the flowers have faded, the plant then becomes dormant throughout the summer, before the growth cycle is repeated again. It's ideal for informal planting schemes including meadows or woodlands, and if left undisturbed (and it's happy where it's planted), it will gradually spread to form a naturalised swathe.

  • Garden care: After flowering, cut back foliage as it dies back. Lift and divide large colonies in spring.
