Buy Digitalis × valinii 'Firebird' foxglove: Runner up RHS Plant of the Year 2019

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: moist, humus-rich soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
  • Flowering period: May to July
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

One of the new breed of foxgloves, 'Firebird' was voted runner up in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year competition in 2019, it has glossy, dark green foliage, and in summer, showy flowerspikes, which are a rich blend of apricot, pink and gold. Said to be hardy down to -5C, it's easy to mix, and it also offers architectural interest.

  • Garden care: Ensure that the soil is kept moist in summer. After flowering cut back the flowered spikes to encourage more sideshoots. Cut down to the ground after flowering. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the plant in early spring.

  • CAUTION toxic if eaten
