Buy Chlorophytum saundersiae 'Starlight' (PBR) chlorophytum (syn. Anthericum): Variegated foliage that forms a fountain-like clump.

This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun to lightly dappled shade
  • Soil: any fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Producing its small lily-like flowers over several months from early summer, this handsome perennial makes an excellent addition to a good-sized pot on the patio. The grass-like foliage is variegated, having creamy white and rich green stripes running along its length - and it forms a fountain-like clump, which adds a structural quality when woven through the border.

  • Garden care: Divide over-large clumps in spring - although they may take a couple of years to start flowering again. Protect emerging foliage from slugs and snails.
