Buy Cercis canadensis Lavender Twist ('Covey') American redbud: Compact and weeping - ideal for smaller gardens

This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: slow
  • Flowering period: March to April
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A new weeping form of American redbud, which is a great little tree for smaller gardens. In early spring, it really puts on a dazzling show when its bare branches are laden with good-sized clusters of lilac-pink flowers. As these fade, lush green heart shaped foliage appear and this turns buttery shades in the autumn. This plant will happily grow in a large pot, provided it is kept well fed and watered.

  • Garden care: Plant in their final location when young as they resent being transplanted. Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly.

This just a little bit different.

It arrived in great condition, it was healthy and we planted it in semi shade it thrived and grew very quickly in to an attractive tree. The colours are lovely and we cannot wait until spring to watch this come to life again.

New tree for my garden

I needed to replace a tree which had to be chopped down due to old age and rotting. This lavender twist was the right size for my garden and it looks very attractive. I have had it for 11 months and it has survived well although I haven't had any blossoming. Hopefully that will occur in the new year.

Last years Mothers Day present

Beautiful flowers and colour. Packed really well as it was a tall plant. Leaves throughout summer and autumn beautiful too.

Lovely small tree

I planted this in a dolly tub to divide my patio area in two. The spring buds are beautiful and I am enjoying the heart shaped summer leaves. Looking forward to the coming autumn colours! I may plant it in the garden next year, but so far it is a nice size for the dolly tub.

What kind of a stake/staking system would you use for a cercis canadensis? Thanks.

Hello, Personally I would not use any stake, unless you are planting it in a very exposed position. In that case, I would use one of these... https://www.crocus.co.uk/product/_/softwood-tree-stake/classid.2000031652/ and tie it on with one of these... https://www.crocus.co.uk/product/_/tree-ties/classid.2000032634/

How tall is the tree when it comes in its 5 litre pot? (Cercis Canadensis lavender weeping)

This is usually around 1m in height when it is sent out.

What size of pot would I need to plant this in specifically?

Hello, It really depends on whether or not you want to pot it up gradually or want to put it straight into its forever home. If the former, then I would recommend a pot around 45cm in diameter, while something around 60- 75cm should be fine for the longer term.
