Buy Centaurea collection perennial cornflower collection: Superb additions to the herbaceous border

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The perennial cornflowers in this collection make superb additions to the herbaceous border, where their thistle-like flowerheads will help bridge the gap between spring and summer. Preferring a sunny position, they will tolerate a little light shade, and will flourish in freely draining poor soils with a neutral to alkaline pH. Cutting the plants back after they have finished flowering will not only encourage fresh new foliage to appear, but it may also result in the production of a few more flowers towards the end of summer. In more exposed positions, provide some support by inserting brushwood canes between the plants.

In each collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties. Supplied in 9cm pots

    Centaurea 'Jordy'
Magnificent, deepest plum-purple flowers top upright stems in late spring and early summer above bushy clumps of foliage. The flowers have a shaggy appearance and mix well with a whole host of colours including rusts, reds, purples and pinks. A new twist on a cottage garden classic, the seedheads will provide interest for several months after the flowers have faded.

    Centaurea montana 'Alba'
In late spring and early summer white flowerheads, which sometimes have a pink-flushed disc, open from attractive buds that are covered with bristle-edged scales. A sun-loving perennial that is tolerant of poor soils.

    Centaurea montana 'Purple Heart'
Purple-eyed flowerheads, each with a ruff of long white florets, formthroughout the summer above the clumps of grey-green foliage, creating easy- going groundcover that will thrive in a sunny spot. It's deal for a more naturalised setting - and the bees and butterflies love it too.

  • Garden care: Stake with brushwood or bamboo canes before the flowers appear. Cut back to the ground after flowering and you may get a second flush of flowers. Lift and divide large clumps every three years in spring.
