Buy Carpinus betulus common hornbeam: A stately addition to larger gardens

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: March
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Vivid green catkins appear in spring, followed by clusters of winged green fruit, and toothed mid-green leaves that turn orange and gold in the autumn before they are shed. Hornbeam is an excellent native tree for a large garden, where it will initially form a generous pyramid before becoming more rounded in habit.

  • Garden care: It requires very little pruning, however if it does get too large for its allotted space, it can be cut back hard.
