Buy bubbleberry bubble berry / Fragaria 'Bubbleberry': tastes like bubblegum!

This plant is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new foliage appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: any soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

If you love your strawberries then you will definitely want to add this one to your collection. The pinkish fruits are slightly smaller in size than the widely cultivated red strawberries, but it is packed full of flavour - in fact they are hailed as having the strongest aroma and flavour of them all. They make a wonderfully addition to summer puddings (if you can manage not to eat all these sweet bubblegum-tasting treats before you get back to the kitchen).

  • Garden care: Prepare the ground well before planting. Clear all the weeds and dig in lots of well-rotted manure. When planting out, space the plants at 45cm intervals with 75cm between each row and apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plants, being careful to avoid the crown. If training onto a support, tie them in as they start to grow and keep the runners off the ground. If you want to grow them in the more conventional way and let them trail along the ground, then put a thick layer of straw or use strawberry mats under the plants to stop the fruit touching the soil when they are starting to form. Sheets of black plastic mulch can also be used, and it will also help retain soil moisture, reduce weeds and encourage early cropping. Cropping times can also be brought forward or extended if you grow them in a greenhouse or cloche tunnel.

Plant was dispatched after 2 weeks like I was advised. It arrived within a few days of being dispatched. The plant itself looks healthy, nice bright strong green leaves, a good size and strong roots and lots of buds, even one open flower! It was packaged extremely carefully meaning it arrived in perfect condition and the soil was damp so it didn't suffer in the hot weather! It's all repotted now so fingers crossed for lots of yummy berries! I'm excited to see if they really taste like bubblegum

I bought this variety for fun for my granddaughters and actually thought it wouldn't taste of bubble gum- they don't know what bubble gum tastes like any way- but it does and they loved it! Try some!

How to create a wildlife-friendly garden

Wildlife-friendly gardens are not only more interesting as you can watch all the comings and goings, but they are often more productive as many creatures will help increase pollination. Garden ponds act as a magnet to dragonflies and damsel flies, along w

Which plants need cloching?

Frost tender plants can be encouraged to grow far more quickly under cloches and one group of plants, the cucurbits, benefit from the extra warmth overnight. This allows them to photosynthesise for longer and squash, courgette and outdoor cucumber plants
