This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position:partial shade
  • Soil: moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil
  • Flowering period: April to June
  • Hardiness: half hardy (will need winter protection)

This is a beautiful orchid that is hardier than most. It slowly spreads to form leafy clumps, which from spring to early summer are crowned with sprays of pure white, bell-shaped flowers. It provides very attractive groundcover for the margins of a pond or bog garden. They also look smart in reliably moist soils in a woodland setting.

  • Garden care: Once planted, leave undisturbed so they can spread. Apply a generous layer of mulch in the autumn.
