Slowly spreading rhizomatous perennials that form mounds of bold, evergreen foliage, and produce clusters of attractive, bell-shaped flowers from late winter to late spring. Native to damp woodlands, meadows and rocky areas, they grow happily in sun or partial shade and prefer rich, moist but well-drained soils. Very tolerant and easy to grow, they will also make invaluable ground cover in dry shade or exposed locations. Their striking foliage is useful for adding textural interest in mixed borders and they look very effective when used in large numbers to edge a path or border.

In each collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties, each in a 9cm pot.

  • Bergenia 'Silberlicht': From early to mid-spring, white flowers with pink sepals appear on the red-flushed stems, and slowly turn pink as they age. These flowers look luminous against the backdrop of the rich-green foliage, making this popular cultivar a very effective choice for shadier positions. Grows to: 45cm.

  • Bergenia 'Baby Doll': Fresh green, often bronze-tinted leaves form tidy, compact clumps that are topped with branching sprays of blush-pink mid- to late spring flowers. The colour of the flowers intensifies as they mature and the red-flushed stems and sepals form an attractive contrast. Grows to: 30cm.

  • Bergenia 'Abendglut': In mid- and late spring, red stems carry sprays of semi-double bright magenta flowers, which rise above the burgundy-flushed, deep green foliage. In winter the foliage turns rich maroon, providing a further season of interest. Grows to 30cm.

  • Garden care: After flowering remove faded flowerheads. Cut off damaged foliage in spring. Lift and divide large clumps in early spring.
