Buy Amorphophallus bulbifer voodoo lily: An exotic-looking tender perennial

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: loam-based potting compost (such as John Innes No. 2) enriched with organic matter
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to June
  • Hardiness: frost tender (will need winter protection)

Exotic-looking, funnel-shaped flowerheads that can grow up to 70cm in length, are held on a very short stalk in early summer, and these are followed by large, tropical-looking leaves, which occasionally have a pink margin. As the season progresses, the flowers fade, but red berries start to form, and these add to the overall appeal.

  • Garden care: Plant tubers 10cm deep into tall pots in late winter or early spring and grow on under glass. Move outside to a sheltered spot after all risk of frost has passed. Keep the plants well watered during the summer, but as the foliage starts to die back down again, reduce water, and then move the pots back into the greenhouse as the temperatures start to dip. They can be kept in their pots throughout the winter, but keep relatively dry, and avoid temperatures below 5C.

  • CAUTION do not eat ornamental bulbs
