Buy Aesculus hippocastanum horse chestnut: Grow your own conkers!

This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: May to June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A large and long-lived tree with handsome, big palmate green leaves, which turn shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. In late spring and early summer, showy upright clusters of creamy-coloured flowers appear, and these are then followed by spiny fruits that contain the much sought-after conkers! It's a stunning specimen for larger gardens.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole.

  • Harmful if eaten
