Buy Acer palmatum 'Ryusen' Japanese maple: A slender form with weeping branches

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: partial shade or sunny, but with some protection during the hottest part of the day
  • Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: slow to average
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This stunning Japanese maple has a tall, thin profile, so it is a great option where space is limited. It also has weeping branches, which are covered with smallish lime green leaves that turn yellow and orange in autumn before they drop. A beautiful plant for a large container (provided they are kept well watered), and given time, it could also be trained to form an arch over a footpath or doorway.

  • Garden care: Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
