Buy Acer collection Japanese maple: A collection of much-loved foliage plants

This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun (but not south-facing) or light shade
  • Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: slow-growing
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Japanese maples are sought after for their decorative foliage, which often takes on vibrant colours before it is shed in autumn.

In each collection you will receive one 13cm pot of each of the following:

Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' An elegant shrubby plant that can be trained as a small tree. Its deeply lobed dark purple-red leaves will often turn fiery red in autumn, and it has an open habit that looks wonderful in a courtyard, or Japanese-style garden. Grows to 6m.

Acer palmatum 'Dissectum' Feathery, mid-green leaves that turn gold and orange in autumn, add textural appeal to the planting scheme. The shrubs rounded, compact habit makes it perfect for smaller gardens, and it also looks stunning when planted alongside an ornamental pool, where its sculptural shape can be reflected in the water. Grows to 2m.

Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku' One of the most popular Japanese maples, this AGM holder offers year-round interest with its pale green, deeply cut leaves that turn soft shades of yellow in autumn. Then, its new shoots glow coral-red in the winter sunlight - long after the foliage has been shed. Grows to 6m.

Garden care: Plant in a sheltered position, with some protection from hot, direct sun and drying winds. Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around base of the plants in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
