  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, well drained and light

The deep burnished orange roots and excellent flavour of this old heritage variety makes it one of the most satisfying carrots to grow well, and it's often to be found winning prizes on the exhibition benches at veg shows. The broad-shouldered roots are elegant, long and tapering, and rarely split even in drier conditions.

  • Growing Instructions:Sow sparingly direct into shallow drills and cover lightly with soil. Protect early and late sowings with cloches. Thin seedlings gradually until they are 5cm apart, watering beforehand to avoid disturbing nearby roots and working in the evening when there are fewer carrot flies around. Growing under horticultural fleece also helps deter flies. For exhibition-length carrots, use a crowbar to make a deep planting hole: fill with free-draining compost and sow into the top.

  • Sow: March-June
