One of the finest rhubarb varieties around, this has been grown for generations and is still setting the standard. A big, generous plant once mature, up to 1.5m across and as much tall, it throws out dozens of thick, sturdy, deep claret coloured stems with a superb rich flavour, keeping you picking rhubarb by the armful for months.

  • Growing Instructions:Sow seed in late spring into trays of good-quality seed compost in a coldframe, or sow direct into a well-prepared seed bed and thin to about 20cm between plants. Pot on individual seedlings until they are about 15cm tall and then plant out into a well-prepared bed with plenty of well-rotted organic matter added, allowing 75cm between plants. When picking rhubarb, pull the stems rather than cutting so that the base plate comes away intact, to avoid stubs rotting back and damaging the crown.
