This magnificent tree is still rarely seen here in the UK, but it is a real head-turner - especially in autumn when the attractive, lobed green leaves turn spectacular shades of red and purple. This autumn colouring starts early, lasts for a long time, and is intensified if the tree is grown on acidic soils. It is a reasonably large tree, but it has an upright, oval shape, so it can be placed in medium to large-sized gardens with ease.
- Garden care: Add a top-dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser around the base of the plant in late spring. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
