This beautiful plant is renowned for its spectacular foliage. When it first emerges in spring, it is flushed with pinkish-bronze before it turns green for the summer. Come the autumn it turns breath-taking shades of orange, red and purple before it drops. The big, plume-like clusters of flowers that appear in summer and usually last into autumn are an added bonus. A wonderful addition to the garden, it can be grown as a large shrub, or small, multi-stemmed tree.

  • Garden care: In late winter or early spring remove any misplaced, diseased or crossing branches. Alternatively, to produce larger leaves cut the stems back hard to within two or three buds of the base in early spring. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
