Buxus sempervirens is known for its ability to be clipped into all sorts of interesting shapes. It is a dense, evergreen shrub, with small, rounded dark green leaves, which look good throughout the year. Here is has been allowed to grow through a wirework frame, which has been shaped like a squirrel. This means that as the plant grows, it is really easy to cut around the frame creating your very own piece of topiary. In time the plant will grow to cover the frame so you will hardly see it at all.
- Garden care: Ensure that the soil or compost is never allowed to dry out. Carefully cut back plants grown as topiary in mid- or late summer. Carry out rejuvenative pruning in late spring. After pruning apply a top-dressing of a balanced slow-release fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone (organic) or Osmacote (inorganic) around the base of the plant, ensuring that none touches the leaves or stems.
