Purple-tinged catkins in late winter, followed by edible nuts ripening in mid-August, and dark-purple, heart-shaped leaves. This upright filbert makes an excellent specimen tree for a small, sunny garden. The tree's common name is derived from the edible nuts that ripen about the time of St. Philibert's Day (20 August).
- Garden care: Prune dead, diseased and damaged wood in March and apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant.
