- Position: full sun to part shade
- Soil: fertile, humus-rich, well-drained, neutral to acid soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: May
- Other features: curled mid-green leaves turning red-purple in autumn
- Hardiness: fully hardy
When the leaves emerge in spring, they have a flushed pink edge, but as they grow on this turns to a greenish yellow, creating leaves with a distinct variegation. In late spring tiny green flowers form in small clusters and these are each surrounded by four showy pink and cream petal-like bracts. Finally, there is another season of interest in the sutumn, when the foliage takes on red and purple tones before it falls. Grow this handsome plant as a large shrub, or remove the lower branches as it matures to creat an excellent specimen tree for a small, sunny garden.
- Garden care: Incorporate a quantity of composted pine needles, ericaceous compost or well-rotted leaf mould when planting. Requires minimal pruning.
