- Position: full sun
- Soil: humus-rich, moisture retentive soil
Mooli, also called daikon, only recently arrived from Japan but are fast catching on as a way of spicing up your cooking in late summer into autumn. The tapered roots grow up to 30cm long and straight, like a pale creamy-white carrot. But there the similarity ends: the flavour is pleasantly peppery, like a radish, and tastes wonderful sliced into stir-fries or salads.
- Growing Instructions:Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil and sow sparingly in mid to late summer direct where they are to grow, in 4cm-deep drills. Thin every other plant as they grow, eating thinnings as they get larger, until there is 10cm between plants. Harvest young, or leave to mature for hotter, more peppery roots. The long roots require stone-free soil, so to ensure this make a hole with a crowbar where each plant is to grow, fill with compost and sow into the top.
