  Clusters of clove-scented, scarlet flowers appear from March to May above the lance-shaped, dark green leaves. These sturdy wallflowers make vibrant spring bedding plants for a sunny, fertile, well-drained site. Compact and free-flowering, they're especially suitable for patio containers, or where border space is limited.
  
  
• Garden care:Start them off in a cold frame or greenhouse using good quality compost. Sow the seeds 5mm deep and keep moist (but not waterlogged) until they germinate. Thin out as soon as they are large enough to handle, potting them into individual pots. Harden off slowly before planting outside in summer. Late sowings can be done direct. When watering, it is best to give the plants a really thorough soak when the soil gets dry, rather than applying a little water every day.
