  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: lean, well-drained, alkaline soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to July
  • Hardiness: short lived perennial

Elegant, slender spires carry white flowers, which slowly take on a rose-pink flush as they age. Particularly well suited to poor, well-drained soils, it is invaluable for adding height and vertical interest throughout the border. A cottage-garden favourite, it also makes a handsome specimen in gravel or prairie style gardens.

  • Garden care:Sow in pots or root trainers using freely-draining compost and cover the seeds lightly. Keep under glass or in a cold frame and when large enough to handle, pot on or plant out after hardening off. They will need a sunny bed with well-prepared, freely draining soil. The flowers will usually not appear until the second year. When watering, it is best to give the plants a really thorough soak when the soil gets dry, rather than applying a little water every day.
