'banksiae var banksia'
White Banksian Rose
This delightful, damask rambling rose produces clusters of small, violet-scented, double, white flowers in April and May. Best in a sunny site away from cold winds its slender stems are ideal for training over an arch or pergola. For maximum results restrict late-summer pruning to the oldest, spent wood.
- Position: full sun
- Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
- Flowering period: April and May
- Flower colour: white
- Other features: small, pale green leaves
- Hardiness: frost hardy (needs winter protection)
- Garden care: Avoid planting in a site in which roses have recently been grown. Apply a balanced fertiliser and a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in late-winter or early spring. Prune after flowering, reducing side-shoots to between two and four buds.
All our roses are field grown. In October/November they are dug up and potted. However, they will not produce any new roots until spring, so don't be surprised if the compost falls away from the roots when winter planting. Some suppliers send out 'bare root' plants unpotted, but we don't as it is easier to manage them on the nursery in pots.
