First introduced in 1865, this rose was a firm favourite of the renowned plantswoman Vita Sackville-West, and all the top designers are still scrambling for it today. It is one of the best climbers for a north facing wall, as the deep claret coloured flowers tend to fade in full sun. The main flush of flowers appear in midsummer, but it will continue to have smaller bursts until autumn. They are tolerant of poor soils, have few thorns, and can be grown as an open shrub if they are given support.

  • Garden care: Avoid planting in a site where roses have recently been grown. Apply a balanced fertiliser and a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in late-winter or early-spring. Prune after flowering, reducing side-shoots to between two and four buds.

All our roses are field grown. In October/November they are dug up and potted. However, they will not produce any new roots until spring, so don't be surprised if the compost falls away from the roots when winter planting. Some suppliers send out 'bare root' plants unpotted, but we don't as it is easier to manage them on the nursery in pots.
