  Each purple petal has three darker veins running through it, and they radiate around a golden yellow throat. These flowers appear in summer on short, wiry stems, which emerge from the fans of slender, generally upright foliage. As the flowers fade, rounded seeds provide further interest.
  
  
• Garden care: Lift and divide large colonies in spring. After flowering dead-head the faded blooms to prevent the plant from self-seeding.
