  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Flower colour: purple with a white throat
  • Hardiness: fully hardy (borderline)

Elegant, trumpert-shaped flowers with a white throat and a broad, purple rim, appear on the upright spikes from midsummer and last well into the autumn. Hardier than many of the other Penstemons, this semi-evergreen perennial has been bred to withstand heavy rains and strong winds. A cottage garden classic that will provide colour and structure for many months.

  • Garden care: Remove the faded blooms regularly to prolong flowering. Apply a dry mulch around the base of the plant to protect the roots from frost damage in autumn. Leave the old foliage to protect the new shoots from frost and then cut it back by a third in spring.
