Golden Groundsel
Ligularia przewalskii3159
- Position: full sun
- Soil: fertile, deep, moist soil
- Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
- Flowering period: July to August
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Towering spires of yellow, daisy-like flowers on dramatic dark purple-green stems appear in July and August. The leaves are striking too: large and deeply cut, with a slightly feathery appearance. This deciduous perennial will spread to cover a large area and provides excellent groundcover for sunny, permanently moist areas of the garden. Try it beside water, or in a bog garden and make sure it has protection from the strong, midday sun.
- Garden care: Protect the young shoots from slug damage using beer traps or environmentally-friendly slug pellets. The plant must be kept moist; line the plant hole with plastic, making a couple of holes in the plastic for drainage. Water regularly during periods of drought. Lift and divide large clumps in spring or after flowering. Apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost in spring.
